December 27th, 2008

A fun family vacation is an opportunity many Americans take for granted - at least once a year. There are so many travel options available to us that it can actually be difficult to decide.

Certainly finances are a determining factor for many who simply seek a relaxing trip. However, there are an awful lot of golf enthusiasts who would also pay whatever it takes to find available tickets to the US Golf Open.

So if you’re planning to visit Farmingdale, NY for the 2009 US Open Golf Tournament, then keep reading for some travel and planning tips that will help your golf vacation go a bit smoother.

About the Golf Course

The next US Open is taking place at the Bethpage State Park, a facility known for its five world-class and public golf courses. The Open will be taking place at the Black Course, which also hosted the Open in 2002.

The park also offers tennis facilities, hiking trails, picnicking, biking and horseback riding.

Hotels and Accommodations in Farmingdale

Farmingdale is a small town and community. However, thanks to the popularity of the golf courses and the appeal of Bethpage State Park, there are a number of hotels within 10 to 50 miles of the resort.

The Marriott Courtyard Republic Airport Hotel

This Marriott hotel is the closest hotel to the US Open and serves both Farmingdale and Melville. The rooms are decent and the hotel offers a 24-hour fitness facility, free wireless Internet, and an outdoor patio and fire pit for guests. During the Open, the hotel will be operating shuttle services to and from the course.

The Long Island Hilton

Located in Melville, the Hilton Long Island is just a short drive from the US Open golf course in Farmingdale, NY. This is a full-service hotel offering an on-site restaurant, 24-hour room service, a fitness center, wireless Internet and numerous meeting facilities.

Sheraton Fourpoints at Plainview

Just a 20 to 25 minute drive from the Black Course and Farmingdale, the Sheraton Four Points is a new hotel in Plainview, New Jersey. The style is similar to a Holiday Inn Express and designed for the traveler on the go. There’s an on-site fitness center, free parking and golf shuttles during the Open.

Fun Stuff in Farmingdale

There’s more to do in Farmingdale than see the US Open. If you have a few extra days, try checking out the American Airpower Museum, take a drive to the Hamptons or visit AdventureLand. Adventureland is a family theme park that features 30 rides and attractions that are great for the kids.

Getting to Farmingdale, NY

There is an airport in Farmingdale, NY, but it’s small and not easily accessible unless you’re flying by private or corporate aircraft. Your best bet is the La Guardia airport which is roughly 30 miles or 40 minutes from Farmingdale, NY.

Scoring Tickets to the 2009 US Open

Unless you already have your tickets for the 2009 US Open golf tournament, you’ll have to go through a third-party seller. The PGA has already closed applications for its random drawings for tickets.

Learn More About Exploring The Lanzarote Resorts Of Costa Teguise

December 26th, 2008

Puerto Del Carmen is situated roughly centrally along the southern coast of Lanzarote, only around a ten minute drive from the island’s airport in Arrecife. Puerto Del Carmen started off life as a small fishing village and the old harbor remains for visitors to explore and visit the many seafood restaurants. It now encompasses around six kilometers of beaches, including wide beach expanses and small coves.

There are many sub aqua schools in Puerto Del Carmen for both the learner, the experienced and those wanting to further their diving log book. Both PADI and BSAC are generally accepted and English is spoken at many diving schools. Most schools use the same small bay from which shore entries and harbor entries are available on a range of dives, including a reef with Pink Coral. Motoring further out are the Los Erizos wrecks at a depth of about 20m. A collection of boats sunk to create an artificial reef for divers to experience just outside of the harbor entrance.

If you fancy seeing the variety of sea-life on offer, but don’t want to go diving, there is always the yellow submarine tour, which also visits the wrecks. Watch out for the divers watching the submarines go by… There are also cycle hire stores in the main shops and a new golf course under construction on the out skirts of the town.

With Lanzarote’s strict planning permission there are no high rise hotels in the resort. Finding Puerto Del Carmen Villas is commonplace and there are an excellent choice of villas available.

Meanwhile, Costa Teguise is situated roughly centrally along the southern coast of Lanzarote, only around a short journey from the island’s airport in Arrecife. The island’s traditional capital of Teguise is only about 10 to 15 minutes’ drive and is quiet, except during its weekly Sunday market, when many bargains and traditional items are to be discovered.

Costa Teguise did not develop from a traditional village, but is a well designed purpose built tourist resort. As such it is well laid out with shopping areas mingled around the various beaches and hotels. As with all of Lanzarote’s resorts, there are no high rise building in sight and a large choice of various holiday accommodation.

Sea diving is possible from the one or two English speaking PADI and BSAC diving schools, but only really experience scuba dives are carried out as the local playa, Playa Jabillo, at only 15 feet depth is not sufficient for the majority of training. Most dive schools will run divers along to Puerto Del Carmen or for an almost totally unique experience, along to the lava caves of Mala.

You can go down to the main beach to visit the wind surfing schools and a vast area of sandy beach with the usual amenities and a shopping centre behind it. Some of the hotels in the central area will have direct beach access. There is the only currently completed golf course on the island near to Costa Teguise.

Finding a villa to rent in Costa Teguise is easy and there are an excellent choice of villas to choose from.

Cruise Trips: How To Have Super Family Fun

December 25th, 2008

Planning your next family vacation? Dreading spending ten hours in the car followed by five days dragging your kids to the beach, the hotel pool and a local restaurant that doesn’t offer a children’s menu?

If you’re looking for a vacation that will show both you and the kids a good time, cruising could be it.

To learn about the benefits and drawbacks of family cruise vacations, keep reading to find out the best tips for planning your first or next family cruise.

Why a Family Cruise Vacation?

Because so many cruise ships are targeted directly toward families, you’re getting a fully packaged vacation in a safe and contained environment.

There are daily, scheduled activities for the children along with parental getaways that both allow you to enjoy time with your children and also have your own private vacation.

Most cruise lines either offer “day camp” options with regularly scheduled, on-board activities or supervised day care facilities. Because your children are on a boat with you and under the care of a well-screened and professionally-supervised staff, you can rest a little easier.

Isn’t it Expensive?

Cruising can be expensive, but most family cruise destinations typically cost about $500-$1000 per person per week. Add up the cost of all the hotels, meals, souvenirs and mileage that your last vacation cost you and compare it to that figure. You’ll quickly see that a cruise vacation budgets in at about the same rate as a full, family vacation.

How do I a Book a “Family” Cruise?

Most cruise lines offer family-specific or family-friendly cruises that are geared specifically toward families with children. Ideally, you want to choose one of these rather than, say, a Senior’s cruise or a Single’s cruise.

Cruise lines like Disney or Norwegian also offer themed ships with full youth programs that are targeted to specific age groups from toddlers to teens. Again, this affords you the chance to take a break and enjoy the pool on your own.

When booking a full family cruise, you may want to consider a travel agent. Often, they’re able to discuss ship amenities, past client reviews and possible discounts.

However, if you’re searching alone and online, try reading past traveler reviews of each individual ship. This will provide you a clearer indication of the ship’s facilities and accommodations than the cruise line’s promotional website.

Things to Consider Before Departure

Make sure everyone in your family has their passport, travel health insurance and extra medication. Keep all of your documents in a safe and secure place with one person.

Kite Boarding Lessons

December 24th, 2008

So, you want to take the bull by the horns do you and try your hand at kite boarding lessons? Bravo! You are about to have the time of your life. Now just pay attention and make sure you do right by the sport and get the proper equipment.

Kite Lesson

At one time getting lessons in kite boarding was rather like finding hen’s teeth. Right, you get the point, impossible. The sport of course was young and somewhat inelegant. It had rough edges and even rougher teachers who were kiting by the seat of their pants. Now however things are radically different. I mean, look at the proliferation of the kites, the competitions, the varied methods of kiting and the increased safety and better equipment.

Kitesurfing school

With all this change for the good happening you have to know that getting kite boarding lessons is going to be a lot easier now than ever before. And, to top that off, the instructors are going to be much more in tune with the latest developments in the sport. After all, many of them also participate in kite boarding.

As you may already know, kite boarding is a style of riding the waves dubbed freestyle or wake-style. Understand that the two different sports require different equipment and make sure you also know what the differences in styles are as well.

Make sure to take your lessons through a kite surfing/boarding center that offers courses in safety devices, lines, how to use the bar, landing, flying, launching and the kite itself. Do not skip any of these lessons, for the information they will teach you keeps you safe out on the water.

A beginner will learn to turn by man handling the kite up into what they dub the neutral postion, halting, actually sinking into the water backwards, then turning your kite in another direction and start all over again. Sounds like a handful doesn’t it? Oh it is, but it’s a lot of fun learning all the various moves, techniques and slang.

Kitesurfing holidays

For instance learn about the heel turn jibe. It’s faster and takes more skill and is virtually impossible to describe in writing. Hey, this is easier done than said and you’ll likely have at least one or more Hindenbergs (kite stalling and crashing) before you’re ready to try this on your own. Go for it!

How To Schedule The Most Gratifying Golf Resort Around Spain

December 21st, 2008

Part of the thrill in planning a family vacation comes in imagining the seemingly endless options you may have available to make a fun trip. The world is simply filled with enjoyable travel packages that can take you to exciting lands. And one of your “can’t miss” choices is playing some of the great golf courses in Spain.

If you want to combine amazing prices with an incredible golf hotel, Spain is where you need to go. The service is at European levels, the grounds are incredible, the golf is even better and the prices are affordable.

The majority of golf hotels and resorts are centered in and around Costa Del Sol, home to famous courses like the Robert Trent Jones-designed Valderrama Golf Club.

But that’s not the only hot course in the region or the country. Costa del Sol is home to 36 courses alone and Spain itself offers hundreds of both public and private courses for you to enjoy. To find out more about the region and the best courses, keep reading.

Andalusia and Coast Line

Costa del Sol is located in Andalusia and it’s only a 50 minute flight from Madrid. Along this incredible coastline, there are piles of amazing courses. Aside from the golf though, you can enjoy beautiful Spanish towns, hike nearby hills or simply lie by the beach and relax.

Best Gold Courses in the Area

Valderrama isn’t just a difficult course - it’s also hard to obtain a tee time unless you have a lot of advance notice. If you can’t get into Valderamma, you may want to try one of the following other courses or resorts. The Golf Club Marbella was also designed by Robert Trent Jones and is located close by. The Real Club de Golf Las Brisas is historic and gorgeous. The Golf Torrequebrada is tortuous and a course for the truly adventurous.

Other Activities in the Area

Along the fabled coastline, now bursting with hotels, marinas and casinos, there are also many small harbors where boats can be chartered for fishing expeditions and water skiing. Yet if visitors have already found enough water on golf courses, they should consider other diversions, such as excursions to Grenada, Seville and small whitewashed towns in the Sierra Nevadas first settled by the Phoenicians and Romans centuries ago.

But no matter what your pleasure, whether it’s golf, a cultural adventure, or even a short ferry ride to Morocco from the port town of Algeciras - at day’s end, eat and drink heartily, because on the Costa del Sol, particularly at its many beachside restaurants, the no-frills cooking is pescadito sardines and small squid or calamaritos, usually roasted on spits and, best of all, served with famous sweet Malaga wines.

Places to Stay

If you’re looking for a golf hotel, Spain has numerous options. For luxury, try the Marbella Club Hotel. For variety, take in the Atalaya Park Golf Hotel and Resort. For a central location, opt for the La Cala Golf and Spa Resort. And if your heart is set on absolute luxury, try looking into the Fairplay Golf Hotel and Spa, a five star hotel with an award-winning course.

Taking A Cruise: Terrific Couples’ Romantic Time Away

December 20th, 2008

With the stresses of work, family schedules, finances and kids, most couples need the occasional break - a romantic retreat to rekindle their romance, invigorate their relationship and give them time to simply relax.

If you’re looking for the perfect romantic getaway that combines worry-free planning, all-inclusive budgeting and romantic sparkle, cruise travel is a great option.

To learn about how to book the best romantic cruise for you and your loved one - regardless of your cruise destination - keep reading for great tips on everything from what to look for in a cruise ship to how to get the best deals for your spouse.

Opt For a Cruise with an Age Limit

The last thing you want on your romantic getaway is to be surrounded by toddlers on their way to a puppet show at the children’s pool. So, book a cruise with an enforced age limit.

Most cruise lines offer cruises that restrict boarding to both individuals 25 and older or married individuals 21 and older. The bulk of these cruises are specifically targeted toward couples and will offer amenities like increased room service, couples’ massages, formal dining and couples’ activities.

If you’re unable to find a cruise with an age limit that’s right for you, most ships offer areas, including pools that are adults-only.

Stay Away From “Singles” Cruises

In contrast to couples’ cruises, some cruise lines offer cruise vacations that are specifically for single travelers or the ’spring break’ party crowd. Unless you want to spend your romantic getaway immersed in loud dance music and terrible pick up lines, you’re going to want to stay away from these options.

Pick a Boat Size That Works For You

A larger boat may have more passengers and a less intimate “feel,” but it also allows for greater anonymity while on-board ship and a larger range of facilities. When choosing a ship, think about what’s important for you in terms of privacy and boat size.

Get the Balcony

As tempting as it may be to book an inside cabin for a discount, know that the space is small and often windowless. If this cruise is a once-in-a-lifetime romantic treat, it’s time to splurge and opt for a cabin with a romantic balcony. When you’re watching the stars go by from bed, you’ll be thankful.

How to Get Great Couples’ Deals

Booking as a couple gives you an advantage. You can often look for “companion” rates that apply to either cabin bookings or air fare to your port. Many cruise lines and some air carriers offer a companion discount for couples traveling together.

Get More Infos On Fishing Sport

December 18th, 2008

When I was a kid, I was absolutely fascinated by my dad fishing tackle box. It seemed to me that he had the most wonderful and wide-ranging fishing supplies you could imagine. With his fishing tackle he could trick any fish there was, or so I thought. He had various flies and lures, most of them hand-tied and custom made by him. No one bought their own fishing supply equipment in those days, except for the basics like fishing line. Every good fisherman made their own. It was a matter of pride as well as a matter of quality.

It appears like, with the fast evolution of fishing supplies, a lot of the sport has been taken out of it these days. I spent some time on a fishing trip with a good friend of mine, a fairly wealthy mal who owns his own motor yacht. He actually has a GPS fishfinder, a weather radar gear, and many other different sort of fancy equipment to find the schools of fish. Finding fish with him isn’t an art anymore. t is not a matter of instincts, of sport or luck. It simply is due to cold hard science - following the manual and letting the technology do the rest. For me, this is taking all the fun out of it.

I dicussed this with him, and he told me it was simply a matter of him owning more fancy fishing supplies than my dad did. He said that had they sold GPS fishfinders in fly fishing stores in my father’s time, everyone would have bought them. They wouldn’t have wasted time with hand tying their own fishing lures if they could right away identify where to get the fish. I however, see things in a different way.

Cruise Fuel Surcharge - Carnival Suspends Fuel Surcharge

December 18th, 2008

As of December 17, 2008, Carnival will no longer charge a cruise fuel surcharge. Previously, Carnival charged as much as $15 per day. They will now be refunding those fuel surcharges through a ship board credit after the 17th.

In a statement on Thursday December 3rd, Carnival’s director of marketing, Bill Harber, said oil prices have dropped low enough for the company to lift the surcharges. “As the price of oil has dropped to $46 per barrel, it has now reached a level where we are able to suspend the fuel supplement,” Harber said.

They warned that if fuel prices rise again, they may start charging the fee again.

I believe this action will end up becoming beneficial for Carnival and should lead to a small increase in bookings. From the beginning, many cruisers were unhappy with the fuel surchages.

While Royal Caribbean passengers must still pay a daily $10 fuel surcharge for 2009, this fee will end starting in 2010. They also said that each quarter in 2009, they will examine the fuel conditions to determine whether to refund the charge.

I believe the removal of the cruise fuel surcharge that Carnival once had will eventually cause Royal Caribbean to follow as well and drop the charges too. I’d expect to see them make a move in the near future.

Lets all hope that oil prices stay down and we never see a cruise fuel surcharge ever again
